Abstract
Background and Purposes: Jokha al-Harthi’s novel Narinjah, through its multilayered narrative, presents a portrait of characters caught in the tension between tradition and modernity and grappling with profound inner conflicts. From a psychological perspective, however, what distinguishes this novel is not merely the sociological pressures depicted in the narrative, but rather the characters’ defensive mechanisms employ in response to what Karen Horney terms “basic anxiety.” Horney’s theoretical framework—particularly the concepts of “neurotic needs” and the “three neurotic trends”—offers an effective lens for examining the contradictory behaviors of the novel’s protagonists. According to Horney, emotional insecurity and experiences of rejection compel individuals to construct an “idealized self,” thereby widening the gap between this idealized image and the “real self.” The central problem of this research is the absence of a systematic analysis that—drawing on Horney’s concepts—can explain the psychological causes underlying the characters’ neurotic behaviors in Narinjah. This study seeks, by moving beyond purely feminist or sociological readings, to demonstrate how the characters’ identity crises emerge directly from their neurotic attempts to survive and maintain psychological equilibrium in an environment that continually reproduces their existential anxiety.
Methodology: This study adopts a descriptive-analytical method to explain, through the theoretical framework of Karen Horney, the psychological layers of the characters in Jokha al-Harthi’s Narinjah. In this process, through close reading of the text, the characters’ actions, reactions, and inner conflicts are identified and interpreted in light of Horney’s key concepts: “basic anxiety,” the “three neurotic trends” (moving toward people, moving against people, and moving away from people), and the conflict between the “real self” and the “idealized self.” In this way, this method allows the study not only to anatomize the characters’ behaviors at the psychological level, but also to show how these defensive mechanisms are shaped by, and interact with, the novel’s sociocultural context. In doing so, the research offers a coherent explanation of the hidden motivations governing the characters’ conduct and illuminates the complexity of their identity formation in the face of biological and social pressures.
Results and Discussion: Narinjah introduces a constellation of major and minor characters, each playing an effective role in driving the narrative and representing its central concepts. The story centers primarily on two characters—Zahour and Bint Amer—with other figures forming a narrative network around them. Zahour symbolizes a woman who is introverted, sensitive, and yet socially engaged—caught between the desire for affection, a sense of guilt, and the struggle for psychological independence. Her behavior reflects a position on the borderline between two of Horney’s patterns: the compliant type (moving toward people) and the detached type (moving away from people). Bint Amer, oscillating between dependence and submission, seeks to manage her inner anxiety through affection and service to others. Yet the failure of her personal dreams leads her toward self-alienation and emotional withdrawal. Bint Amer is a reflection of the traditional Omani woman whose basic anxiety is shaped by social and emotional constraints, and who adopts nurturing and self-effacing roles as strategies for survival. Surour embodies the internal conflict between the real self and the idealized self in Horney's theory. Despite her privileged background and outward confidence, she struggles with deep-seated insecurity. Kohl exemplifies the “affection-seeking” individual in Horney’s framework, seeking security in the love and emotional affirmation to cope with basic anxiety. Imran represents, above all, the “moving against people” type: shaped by childhood deprivation and emotional failure, he compensates for inner feelings of inferiority and insecurity through dominance, rebellion, and competitiveness.
Conclusion: The fictional world of Narinjah offers more than a reflection of Oman’s social structure; it presents a psychologically intricate portrait of individuals responding to cultural, familial, and emotional pressures. From Horney’s perspective, the novel narrates a continuous struggle with anxiety, fear, and the human search for security within a transforming world. Across class, gender, and cultural backgrounds, the characters exemplify Horney’s three neurotic types: dissolving into others, dominating others, or withdrawing from them. By linking these psychological types to the cultural and historical context of Oman, al-Harthi creates a multilayered depiction of a society in transition—one in which individuals seek but seldom attain a stable psychological equilibrium.

Abstract
