Background and Purposes: Contemporary fiction has moved beyond the boundaries of traditional verbal narrative by drawing on multiple expressive modes, foremost among which is bodily movement as a language parallel to speech, carrying profound psychological and dramatic connotations. The concept of choreography has evolved from its traditional meaning—associated with the arrangement of dance until the end of the Middle Ages—into a science that studies the organization of the body in space and time, encompassing every bodily, gestural, and transitional movement performed in space and laden with meanings that exceed a merely decorative function. Building on this conceptual evolution, the present study raises a central question: How can the narrative body, through its precise movements, gestures, and transitions, establish an independent dramatic structure that transcends a descriptive function, carries psychological meanings and inner conflicts, and serves as an objective correlative for language in expressing characters’ existential transformations? What choreographic patterns does Naeem al-Musafir employ in The Dream of Uruk to transform the narrative body into a fully-fledged dramatic agent? From this central problem stem more specific operative questions: How do movements of the mouth, eyes, hands, and head produce alternative communicative meanings that replace speech, and how do they express states of repression, surprise, defiance, and reassurance? Why do acts of entering and exiting within the novel’s space carry symbolic dimensions beyond mere spatial transition, expressing major existential shifts such as movement between security and danger, reality and myth, and familiarity and alienation? And how does the integration of body, space, and time contribute to creating a complex dramatic structure that transforms the reader from a passive recipient into a spectator of a visual-kinetic performance? The significance of this research lies in offering a new approach to reading contemporary Iraqi fiction, opening the door to interdisciplinary approaches combining literature and body arts, and highlighting the creative aspects of Naeem al-Musafir’s writing that have not received sufficient critical attention in previous scholarship. Prior studies, as demonstrated in the research background, have been limited to examining religious symbolism or traditional narrative elements, without attending to the choreographic dimension and visual patterns in his works. Therefore, this research aims to explore the aesthetics of choreographic movement expression in the novel The Dream of Uruk, revealing how meaning is formed through the narrative body and demonstrating the functions of these movements in characterization, plot development, tension creation, and production of symbolic meanings.
Methodology: This research adopts a descriptive-analytical methodology, utilizing movement analysis tools derived from choreography and theatrical performance theories to examine patterns of expressive, gestural, and transitional movements in Naeem al-Musafir’s novel The Dream of Uruk, while carefully tracing the formation of meaning through the narrative body. The theoretical framework rests on three main concepts: expressive movement related to facial expressions (mouth and eyes), gestural movement related to hands and head, and transitional movement related to entering and exiting within the narrative space. The Dream of Uruk was selected as a richly layered narrative text replete with multi-level kinetic manifestations that transform the narrative body into a dramatic agent and imbue the text with theatrical visual qualities.
Discussion and Results: Analysis of the data revealed that Naeem al-Musafir employs expressive movements of the mouth as a mirror of the internal conflict between exterior and interior; the act of “clenching the teeth” expresses emotional repression and translates silence into a bodily message charged with tension and implicit negation, as seen in the scene of Ali’s absorbed silence. Similarly, the act of whispering accompanied by trembling reflects a dramatic paradox between conscious composure and the body’s involuntary betrayal of fear, embodying the human contradiction between what we say and what we feel. Regarding eye movements, the findings showed that the author uses “closing the eyes” as a gateway for transition from sensory perception to imaginative perception and from reality to dream, as in Ali’s liberation scene in the ziggurat space. “Scrutinizing gaze” expresses epistemic surprise and the mind’s effort to translate visual input into comprehensible meaning even in the absence of auditory evidence, while “stealing a glance” embodies hesitation, shyness, and the transition from social rejection to acceptance. In the domain of gestural movements, the research highlights the author’s skill in employing hand movements as an alternative communicative language replacing speech; in the scene of waving and drawing in the air, the hand transforms from a hesitant greeting tool into a formative instrument that draws complex meanings and establishes a private language between two separate worlds. The act of “simultaneously opening palms,” collectively and in unison, conveys a message of defiance and candor, inverting the power dynamic between captors and captives. Head movements also carry dense connotations; “nodding in agreement” expresses the transition from surprise to reassurance, while “shaking the head in regret” expresses temporary helplessness and becomes a gateway to reflection and escape from deadlock.
Conclusion: The research concluded that the novel The Dream of Uruk constitutes a richly narrative text for choreographic expression, wherein movement becomes an independent dramatic structure conveying internal conflicts and psychological transformations. The results confirmed that choreographic expression in this novel is based on the organic integration of body, space, and time; this integration generates a complex structure that lends the text theatrical qualities, transforms the narrative body into a fully-fledged dramatic agent, and opens new horizons for receiving the text as a visual-kinetic experience that surpasses the limits of mere language. The research also identified diverse movement patterns across three domains—expressive, gestural, and transitional—each performing its specific dramatic function in characterization and meaning transmission, enriching signification and multiplying interpretive possibilities.

Abstract
