Abstract
Paradox is an artistic device which has been considered by critics as a highlighting factor and a defamiliarizing tool in literary texts. In contemporary literature, this device has been regarded as one of the most important features of contemporary poetry and several functions and uses are attributed to it. The present study tries to expose the functions of paradox in Ahmed Matar's poetry by employing a descriptive-analytic method and to figure out the reasons why he has used this mode of expression. After analyzing this poet's poems, it was concluded that paradox is the most important stylistic feature of Ahmed Matar's poetry and that he has used two types of paradoxes: mixed paradox and semantic paradox. This technique was used in his poetry in order to clarify some political, social concepts, freedom and essential concepts and by using a derisive language and in a joking manner at the service of purposes such cases as mockery of Arab rulers and denigration of Arab society for accepting cruelty and tyranny.
